Your Virtual Assistant, Arlene de Waal

You’re Not a Newbie

This article follows on from Week #42 post on Unethical VA's. I believe many of us administration experts will find it insulting to be called a 'newbie' by other VA's who use it in the incorrect context, i.e., we are administration experts who are new to the VA industry as business owners, we haven't lost any of our expert admin skills. Many clients are then left with the misconception that being new to the VA industry automatically makes us a 'cheaper' prospect hence the ridiculous and insulting rates they want to pay. The GrittyVA, Danielle Keister has once again put things into context for us as she is a veteran in the field and if you haven't already subscribed to our blog, I suggest you do by clicking on the backtrack URL at the end of her article. I hope you will enjoy the post as much as I always do!

I don’t like that word “newbie.” I think it’s disrespectful and I consciously avoid using it whenever possible.

The only people who should be in this industry are those who have a professional level of skill and experience. And those people aren’t newbies. They are simply new in business. That’s a big difference.

And another thing… the idea that you need to charge less just because you are new in business is complete and utter rubbish! Shame on those so-called Virtual Assistant “industry experts” and organizations who have been telling you that!

They get upset about folks who aren’t charging enough for their business to be financially successful and in the very next breath tell them if they’re new, they don’t deserve to be charging as well as any other business. What hypocrisy and nonsense! You shouldn’t be taking business advice from people like that.

You might have a learning curve when it comes to successfully running and managing a business (who doesn’t), but that doesn’t make your administrative skills and years of experience any less valuable.

Of course, you might not have the confidence or knowledge to charge well or even appropriately, but lacking confidence does not mean you lack value. Again, big difference.
